Advice for the new Education Secretary

Trinity Washington University President Patricia McGuire has good advice for the next U.S. Education Secretary in today’s Chronicle of Higher Education.

McGuire points especially to the regulatory environment that outgoing secretary Arne Duncan created which has effectively treated higher education like K-12 schools.  To McGuire, K-12 and higher education are both vital but unique entities that require different treatment.

Perhaps the most important quote from the article: For example, the torrent of data that is the College Scorecard now leads to the creation of lists that set up inappropriate comparisons of random factoids with no recognition of the real differences in circumstances for first-generation low-income students, nontraditional students, women, and minority students and the differences among schools that, as a matter of mission, choose to serve many different student populations.
